Over the last few months Shark Werks has quietly been working behind the scenes on introducing their own limited production centerlock Magnesium wheel for widebody 997.2 GT3RS and GT2RS cars. Here it is, the Shark Werks Magnesium RS wheel. These wheel are available in factory-style satin black, guards red or silver finishes.

For the track-minded 911 GT3 RS and/or GT2 RS owner, the Shark Werks Magnesium RS centerlock wheel is based upon a 100% forged magnesium alloy construction, typically found only in dedicated professional race cars. The majority of forged wheels are from aluminum but for an even stronger and lighter process we opted for magnesium and utilized a sporty mesh design theme. Although magnesium is 30% less dense then aluminum by volume, and consequently lighter, its weight is only one of several performance benefits that have historically made it a material of choice for super cars (and race cars) over the years, including the Porsche 959, Carrera GT and Rally Cars.

Lighter wheels reduce unsprung weight on the vehicle’s suspension, allowing it to be much more responsive to changes in road (or track) conditions. Better heat conduction associated with magnesium can help dissipate heat from the brakes, which improves braking performance in more demanding driving conditions and reduces the chance of brake failure due to overheating.

Compared to aluminum, magnesium has a significantly higher fatigue strength and, more importantly, a considerably higher ultimate tensile strength. When used in wheel manufacturing, this essentially means that a greater cross-section of material can be used, effectively increasing the overall stiffness of the wheel at comparable weight. A stiffer wheel allows for much more precise steering and suspension feedback, without the loss of energy due to uncontrolled flex in the wheel. This ultimately gives the driver a more direct connection to the car and the ability to achieve a greater level of control during any driving situation.

The Shark Werks Magnesium RS Wheel is available in limited fitments for 2010-11 997.2 GT3RS and 2011 GT2RS. Designed to work with the factory Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Weight Comparison vs Stock Wheels:
Front 9J x 19 19.5 vs 23 pounds
Rear 12J x 19 22.5 vs 27.5 pounds

Performance improvements and proper car care are addictions for most Porsche owners. Every year, new and improved add-ons and modifications are unveiled to give Porsches a unique sound, sleeker look, smoother ride and, of course, more speed.

With all of the options available, it’s hard to decide what to focus on. High-quality engine oils are important, but popular tuning and modifications focus on the big picture: sound, speed and looks.

1. Suspension upgrades. There’s nothing like the look of a lowered 997 Turbo barely hovering over the pavement or handling corners without hesitation. Getting a suspension upgrade or installing a kit that lowers your ride by even an inch will not only increase its handling, but will also give it a look to die for.

2. Exhaust system. Porsches have a unique and powerful sound straight from the factory, but upgrading your exhaust will make it even more specialized. Make sure you do your research before installing a new exhaust; some Porsche engines require a delicate balance of back pressure. (Installing the wrong exhaust could cause you to lose a few HP.) Exhaust upgrades can remove turbo lag, increasing throttle response time and giving your car a sound like no other.

3. Intercooler upgrade. After-market intercoolers are a perfect complement for turbo and supercharged engines. Through cooling the warm air intake, your engine will breathe easier. Find an intercooler kit with specific benefits to your model of car; there is always the potential a kit might not be appropriate depending on your engine and other modifications.

4. Air intake kits. Performance air intake kits deliver more power and torque. For turbo engines, the right intake kit can help improve turbo boost response. There are kits out there that can control and maximize the air intake without modifications under the hood.

5. Brake kit upgrade. There are many brake upgrades for Porches, whether you need better handling on the track or want smoother and easier breaking during everyday driving. Upgrades typically come with larger rotors. This will result in longer pad life and, of course, better braking. Combined with a low suspension, big rims and a shiny finish, brake upgrades add that final presence to your Porsche.

When looking to tune your car, make sure you do your research. Porsches have plenty of specialized upgrades for each model.

Öhlins has released a sublimely engineered suspension upgrade for the much vaunted Porsche 997 GT3 RS. The Swedish manufacturer has genuinely raised the bar for the Porsche aftermarket with its latest kit, offering discerning enthusiasts the chance to balance competition levels of quality, adjustment and control, with genuine everyday usability and comfort.

The kit is a unique proposition, offering a 46mm two-way adjusted shock in the front balanced by a lightweight 36mm shock in the rear with an in-line reservoir for optimum performance combined with minimal size. Perfect for maximising under-arch space for the best possible wheel and tyre set up.

The TTX46MT Club Race front strut uses a forged cylinder head and features two way adjustment for separate compression and rebound adjustment in seconds. Suitable for a 60mm spring, the unit works perfectly ‘out of the box’ but can easily be honed or adjusted by an Öhlins Approved Service centre to precisely tailor it to the driver’s precise specification.

The rear TTX36 damper unit is a perfect complement, being a twin-tube piggy back unit, boasting separate one way compression and rebound adjusters. This unit takes a 57mm spring and both front and rears are fully pressure balanced and precisely matched.

Öhlins is also a proud sponsor of the Porsche Club GB race series, including the new GT3 Cup Challenge, where a pure competition based package is available for those people competing in the series.

Even for road wheels it is simply not enough to just look good. But the pressures of racing are in another league. For this ruthless environment Cargraphic have designed their new wheels with the telling name Motorsport. The 18 and 19 inch rims come with central locking and are available for all Porsche vehicles including the current GT3. Racing wheels have a long tradition at Cargraphic, who celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2010. Unlike the majority of professional vehicle tuners, Cargraphic still produce their wheels in-house in Germany right down to the last screw, which means they can implement their constructive ideas precisely.

This becomes especially relevant in motor racing with its extremely high requirements for lightweight construction and structural strength. Because wheels are revolving unsprung mass, every extra gramme is felt immediately in several ways. Rigid chassis and tyres with minimal damping also provide a tough endurance test for the rims. That is why Cargraphic fit their racing models with reinforced cast aluminium inner beds and a strong rotation-forged, heat-treated centre as standard.

The layout is also ideal for racing. Cargraphic offer wheel centres in different sizes for the front and rear axles to enable optimal operation of big braking systems. Thinner spokes also let in the maximum amount of cool air.

The racing rims are suitable for almost all Porsches with central locking as a result of clever modular styling: variable offsets mean they can be fitted on wide-bodied vehicles just as easily as on those with a narrower silhouette. Cargraphic Motorsports wheels look just as good on older racing cars as on modern ones thanks to a timeless design with Y- and U-shaped spokes and a wide rim centre.

The Porsche 996 Turbo and C4S model was designed and built with high performance braking in mind. However, this amazing platform has now become a popular vehicle for the track use. With track racing comes the needs for improved braking over what the stock 4piston 330mm brakes can handle.

Agency Power has just finished their newest product for the Porsche 996 Turbo vehicles from 2001-2005. What Agency Power has engineered is a Plus 1 Bracket Kit which allows you to take the factory 4piston 330mm brakes and upgrade to the 350mm OEM rotors that are found on the Porsche 997 Turbo. This bracket kit is essentially a spacer that goes between your caliper and the wheel carrier to allow your caliper to fit over the larger rotors. The larger rotors will give you increased surface area to provide you better braking and longer pad life.

These kits fit all 2001-2005 Porsche 996 Turbo or C4S with standard non ceramic brakes.

You can find this kit on Vivid Racing.
